The most important of them all is to make sure you invest in a suit that makes you feel and look GOOD!
If you don't go suit shopping very often then make sure you pick a suit that's versatile and classic. In other words don't invest in a suit that's driven by trends.
Here's what you need to keep in mind:
The Colour:
Pick a two piece suit in a dark colour (Eg.Charcoal, Dark Navy, Black) - They're practical and versatile since they can be paired with an array of shirts and accessories.
The Fit:
Shoulder - The suit shoulders should hug your shoulders. Move your arms forward and backward to make sure it's not too tight and uncomfortable.
Sleeve Length - Only about half an inch to an inch of your shirt should peak out. If not, you can always get the length altered.
Chest - The jacket button should easily open and there should be no gaping. If just your fist fits between the buttoned blazer and shirt you're good to go. If not, you've got to go a size up or down.
Blazer Length - Hang your hands down on the side and see if you can cup the hem of the blazer. It should just touch your finger tips or be right above it. If not, it's too long.
Trousers - The half or full break would be the perfect choice. That just means the trouser shouldn't be riding above your shoes and showing your socks and it shouldn't be too much of a full break where there's a huge hem sitting on top of the shoe and covering the entire heel.
The Details:
Two Button Suits - You should only ever button the top and while sitting make sure to unbutton that too. This style is ideal for all body types.
Three Button Suits - You should always have the middle button fastened while buttoning the first one is optional. Make sure the last one's always unbuttoned. Again, all of them need to be unbuttoned when you sit. This style is ideal for men of all body types but particularly for those who are more heavily built.
One Button Suits - You should always have it buttoned while standing and unbuttoned while sitting. This style is ideal for more contemporary dressers and those with slimmer body types.
Fabric:
Pick a light wool fabric that can be worn all year round.
Lining:
A good suit blazer will have a fully lined interior. Make sure the pattern on the lining is nice and simple so it can match most of your shirts.
That's it! Make sure to keep all this in mind and you're sure to own that Perfect suit!
